Primitive Blacksmithing: Medieval Iron Cutlery

The Iron Age Feasting Set

The ability to hand craft tools from readily available materials is not only a critical, long term survival skill, but it is also an essential aspect of human heritage and history. Learn blacksmithing by forging your own medieval style spoon, fork, and feasting knife!

Single Day Primitive Forging Class

Join us in this beginning level primitive blacksmithing class and learn the fundamentals of forging steel using primitive Iron Age technology.  Hand forge your own Viking style feasting knife, Colonial iron spoon or Medieval two-pronged fork.

Students may choose to forge one or more projects (spoon, knife, fork) given the time limitations.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Manage a primitive charcoal pit forge and simple blacksmithing tools
  • Practice a variety of fundamental blacksmithing techniques
  • Understand the basics of steel metallurgy
  • Choose to forge one of three projects (Medieval feasting knife, iron spoon, two pronged fork)
  • Finish iron eating utensils for safety, comfort, and durability

*Children 12 and under may share a project with a paying adult at a reduced price. **Feasting knives are forged from low carbon steel and are not hardened ***Beginning level students can expect to finish one item by the end of class
